Winning a SPASA award is one of the highest achievements in the Australian pool and spa industry. Every year, the Swimming Pool & Spa Association (SPASA) recognises projects that demonstrate exceptional design, innovation, craftsmanship, and customer satisfaction. These awards celebrate builders who consistently deliver outstanding results and help set the benchmark for excellence across the industry.
But what does it actually take to create an award-winning pool? While every project is unique, SPASA judges assess entries against a range of important criteria that go far beyond appearance alone.
An award-winning pool should feel like a natural extension of the property. Judges look at how well the pool complements the home’s architecture, landscaping, and outdoor living areas.
The best designs maximise the available space while creating a practical and visually appealing environment. Whether it’s a compact courtyard or a large family backyard, every element should work together to create a cohesive outdoor retreat.
Behind every beautiful pool is expert construction. SPASA judges carefully assess the quality of workmanship, including installation, finishes, engineering, and attention to detail.
From perfectly aligned paving to seamless coping and plumbing, every stage of construction contributes to the overall standard of the finished project. High-quality craftsmanship ensures the pool not only looks impressive but also performs reliably for many years.
Award-winning pools often include creative design features that improve both function and appearance.
These may include:
Innovation isn’t simply about adding more features. It’s about selecting elements that genuinely improve the homeowner’s lifestyle while creating a distinctive backyard.
A stunning pool still needs to be practical.
SPASA judges consider how well the pool suits the homeowner’s needs. Family-friendly designs, safe access points, comfortable seating, entertaining spaces, and efficient layouts all contribute to a successful project.
The best pools balance beauty with everyday usability, ensuring they’re just as enjoyable to live with as they are to admire.
It’s often the small details that separate a great pool from an award-winning one.
Judges examine everything from finish quality and symmetry to the way materials complement one another. Lighting, waterline finishes, landscaping, and the overall presentation all contribute to the final result.
A truly exceptional project demonstrates consistency and precision throughout every aspect of the design and construction process.
SPASA awards also recognise the importance of the client journey.
Successful projects reflect clear communication, professional project management, and a commitment to delivering on the homeowner’s vision. From the initial consultation through to completion, a positive customer experience plays an important role in creating an award-worthy project.
Satisfied homeowners are often the strongest endorsement of quality workmanship.
