What is the very first step, before contacting a carpenter or decking professional for a quote?
I would suggest doing some research first to find out what materials you want to use to build your deck. Do you want a solid timber deck or maintenance free composite decking? If you want solid timber decking, investigate the options. Solid timbers vary in the finished look, but they can also vary significantly in price.
How do our customers know if they are paying for a qualified service?
There are many people out there that can easily say “yep I can build you a deck” but I think it is important that the following questions can be answered:
– Are they licensed and insured?
– Do they handle the council approval / permits?
– Can they provide references and examples of previous work?
Is there any hidden costs in quotes?
Initial quotes may only be estimates; on most occasions a site inspection is required. Professionals will tell you everything you need to know, and when the final quote is given, even if the prices are higher than the initial quote, you will understand why. The quote should explain in detail and you as the customer should be confident with each phase of the job.
What should be on the contract?
The contract should include the builder’s licence number and contact details. It should outline a start date and approximate completion date and finally it should list the warranty information and a payment schedule.
If you can ask the right questions, when the job is finished you should be happy and confident that it is built to Australian Standards. If you care about the results, be sure that your new deck is being built by a trustworthy professional. It may cost a little more, but in the long term you’ll be happier with your new deck!
