Pool chemicals are used to ensure swimmers are safe by ridding pools of bacteria and germs that can cause to recreational water illnesses. However, if not handled correctly pool chemicals can pose a threat to users in or out of the pool and cause injuries.
Injuries can include breathing in fumes when opening pool chemical containers, trying to pre-dissolve pool chemicals and splashing chemicals in the eyes. All are preventable if the following rules are applied to keep your family safe.
Do’s:
• Store chemicals as recommended by the manufacturer
• Prevent chemicals from mixing together or getting wet by storing them in a cool, dry place
• Secure chemicals away from children and animals
• Read chemical packaging and manufacturer instructions strictly before using
• Wear suitable protective gear, such as glasses and gloves
• Wash contaminated clothing immediately and rinse your skin with water if you are splashed
• Clean up any spills quickly
Don’ts:
• Never pre-dissolve solid chemicals or add water to liquid chemicals to avoid splashing
• Don’t combine chlorine products with each other, acid, or any other element
• Swap measuring scoops between products
• Smoke near chemicals
• Store liquids close to other chemicals, petrol or metallic items
