Chlorine exists in natural salt and is accompanied by a process to separate the two so that the chlorine can get rid of the presence of any unwanted bacteria. This separation process is used in salt water systems to ensure the water is properly sanitised. The process is achieved through electrolysis, which sends a current through the water. This current is a perfectly safe one. When this occurs the chlorine parts from the salt and latches on to the bacteria it finds nearby. When the electrolysis process stops, the chlorine attaches to the salt once again. This then makes it safe and convenient to use, most people find salt more comforting than other chlorine and bromine only based water systems.
Although salt water spas do contain chlorine they are a lot more gentle on the skin and eyes than traditional spas and pools, which is why most people are choosing to buy salt water spas and pools.
